Whether the Spinster's Home was the original structure built by John Smith around 1659 or a remaining dependency of Robert Carter's larger Corotoman Estate is debated.  The home was a story and a half with 8 1/2 foot ceilings.  Mary Walker Carter sold the Corotoman Estate about 1850, but the Spinster's House (or "Spinning House") remained standing until 1926.  (Source: Richmond Times Dispatch, 11/29/1936)
